Your primary mission upon arrival is to minimize all physical exertion; we advise moving with extreme deliberation and spending as much time as possible horizontal in your sleeping bag to maximize oxygen saturation. Because Summit Night typically begins around midnight, you must force-feed your body a high-calorie dinner and drink plenty of fluids, even if the altitude has suppressed your appetite. Our guides will help you organize your gear during the afternoon—ensuring your headlamp has fresh batteries and your water bottles are insulated—so that you aren’t scrambling in the dark and cold during the final departure.

Mental fortitude is the deciding factor at Barafu, and we encourage you to use the quiet afternoon hours for visualization and focused breathing. It is essential to keep your summit water bladders and electronics inside your sleeping bag to prevent them from freezing before the climb even begins. Any symptoms of altitude sickness must be reported to our team immediately, as we conduct final oxygen and pulse checks to ensure you are safe to proceed.
